FAQ · Basics
The app is free to download and free to use with a standard account for everyday chat. Paid plans such as ChatGPT Plus (or higher) add higher usage limits, access to newer or more capable models, and features like Advanced Voice. You don't need to pay to use the app, and exactly what each plan includes changes over time, so check the plan details in the app and on OpenAI's help center before subscribing.
Install only from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and confirm the developer is listed as OpenAI. Look at the rating and download count, and ignore clones that copy the logo, charge a big upfront fee, or ask for strange permissions. Never install ChatGPT from an unofficial APK site or a link in an ad, email or message. Starting from the store's own search, rather than following an outside link, is the safest habit. See our download guide.
The official app from OpenAI is widely used and available in the Apple App Store and Google Play, which is the safest way to get it. As with any AI tool, avoid sharing sensitive personal, financial or confidential information, review your data controls in Settings, and be aware conversations may be used to improve models unless you opt out. The main safety risk is installing a fake clone instead of the genuine app.
The core experience — chatting, voice, camera, sync — is very similar on both. The differences are mostly in platform integrations: iPhone uses the App Store, Siri and the share sheet, while Android uses Google Play, can sometimes be set as the digital assistant, and has its own widget and share menu. New features can also reach one platform slightly before the other. See our iPhone and Android guides for the specifics.
FAQ · Features
Yes. Open a chat and tap the voice icon to speak instead of type and hear spoken replies. There's a standard voice option and, on eligible plans, an Advanced Voice mode with more natural, real-time conversation. The app needs microphone permission the first time you use it. Availability and behavior depend on your plan, region and app version, so check the app for what's live for you. More on our voice mode page.
On supported plans the app can take in images: snap a photo with the camera or upload one from your library, then ask about it — a menu, a math problem, a landmark, a screenshot. It reads and reasons about the picture. The app asks for camera or photo permission when you first use those features, and you can manage that access in your phone's settings. Exact capabilities vary by plan and app version.
No. ChatGPT runs on OpenAI's servers, so the app needs an internet connection to send your messages and receive replies. Without a connection you can read past conversations that are already loaded, but you can't get new answers. If responses stall, it's usually a connection or server issue rather than a fault in the app itself.
Yes. When you're signed in with the same account, your conversation history syncs across your phone, other devices and the website, and settings like custom instructions and saved memory generally follow your account too. So you can start a chat on your phone and continue it on a laptop. If a recent chat is missing on one device, check you're on the same account and connected, then reopen the app. See app vs website.
Yes. You can turn ChatGPT notifications on or off and fine-tune them in your phone's Settings — under Notifications on iPhone, or Apps then ChatGPT then Notifications on Android — and you can silence the app with a Focus or Do Not Disturb mode. If you never allowed notifications, you won't receive any until you enable them.
On supported versions, yes. Both iPhone and Android can offer a ChatGPT widget that lets you start a new chat or voice with a single tap from the home screen. Add one by touching and holding the home screen and choosing the ChatGPT widget. The widgets on offer change between app versions, so if you don't see one, update the app first.
ChatGPT can understand and reply in many languages, and you can simply write to it in the language you prefer. The app's own menus and interface are also localized into a range of languages depending on your device settings. Quality can vary by language, and supported languages expand over time, so if you rely on a specific language, test it in the app and check OpenAI's help center for current support.
FAQ · Privacy & data
By default, conversations may be used to help improve OpenAI's models, but there's usually a data control in the app's settings that lets you turn that off. Open the app's Settings and look for the data controls to review or disable it, and to manage chat history. Because these controls and their names change, check the current options in the app and OpenAI's help center. As always, avoid sharing sensitive personal, financial or confidential information.
Open your list of conversations, swipe or long-press a chat, and choose delete to remove it. In the app's Settings you can usually clear all conversations at once and manage related data controls. Deleting from the app removes the chat from your synced history. If you want to delete your whole account, that's a separate, more permanent step handled through account settings — check OpenAI's help center for the current process.
FAQ · Fixes & limits
Yes, there can be. Free and paid plans have different limits on things like how many messages you can send in a window, how often you can use certain models, or how much you can use advanced features. When you hit a limit the app usually tells you and, where relevant, when it resets. The exact numbers change over time and by plan, so check the app and OpenAI's help center for current limits.
Login problems are often caused by an outdated app, a shaky connection, or a stuck session. Try updating the app in the store, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, force-closing and reopening it, and, if needed, resetting your password. If one sign-in method (email, Google, Apple, Microsoft) stalls, try another. If ChatGPT is down for everyone, sign-in can fail too, so check OpenAI's status page. More in our fixes guide.
Yes. ChatGPT can be confidently wrong or out of date on any device, including the app, so treat its answers as a helpful starting point rather than a final authority. Double-check anything important — especially medical, legal, financial or safety-related information — against trusted sources. Using the app's web search, where available, can help with current facts, but it's still wise to verify before you act on a response.
