Search the App Store
Open the App Store, tap Search, and type ChatGPT. Confirm the developer is listed as OpenAI before you tap Get.
iOS guide
Install the real app from the App Store, sign in, and then wire it into iOS the way iPhone owners actually use it — Siri and the Action button, the share sheet, widgets, Focus, voice and the privacy settings worth checking. Independent, up to date, and written for iPhone.
Install & sign in
Two minutes, three steps. The only thing to be careful about is picking the genuine listing — several look-alikes try to ride on the ChatGPT name.
Open the App Store, tap Search, and type ChatGPT. Confirm the developer is listed as OpenAI before you tap Get.
Tap Get, authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your Apple Account, then open it. The download is free.
Log in with your existing account — email, Google, Apple or Microsoft — or create a new one. Your history syncs with the web.
Ignore paid look-alikes that copy the logo or charge upfront. Never install from an ad or a link in a message. Download safely →

iOS integrations
The app is good on its own, but it gets much better once it's plugged into the parts of iOS you already use every day.
On newer iPhones you can create a Shortcut that opens ChatGPT or starts voice, then assign it to the Action button or trigger it with Siri. Availability depends on your iOS version — check the Shortcuts app and Settings.
From Safari, Photos or Notes, tap Share and pick ChatGPT to send selected text, a link or an image straight into a new chat. Tap More to enable it if it isn't showing.
Touch and hold the Home Screen, tap the plus, search ChatGPT, and add a widget to jump into a new chat or voice. Available sizes change between app versions.
Use the standard iOS keyboard with dictation for quick input, or switch to the in-app voice icon for a full spoken conversation when your hands are busy.
Control push alerts under Settings, Notifications, ChatGPT, and use a Focus mode to silence the app during work or sleep without turning it off entirely.
Tap the voice icon to talk instead of type. Standard voice works broadly; Advanced Voice adds natural, real-time chat on eligible plans. Voice mode →
Privacy on iOS
iOS gives you fine-grained control over what any app can touch. A minute in Settings keeps the app doing only what you want.
Open the app's own Settings to review whether your chats can be used to improve models — usually a toggle you can turn off — and to clear or delete conversations.
Under Settings, Privacy & Security, check the app's Microphone and Camera access. Grant them only if you use voice and photo input.
You can allow full library access or limit it to selected photos, so the app only ever sees images you deliberately share.
As with any AI tool, avoid sending sensitive personal, financial or confidential details. See the FAQ on data and training.
iPad note
Prefer a larger screen? The identical app runs on iPad and, thanks to sync, picks up right where your iPhone left off.
Get it from the App Store on iPad. On the wider display it feels closer to the website, with more room for long answers.
Supported iPad models let you use Split View or Stage Manager to keep ChatGPT beside another app while you work.
Sign in with the same login and your chats, custom instructions and memory follow you across iPhone, iPad and the web.
Curious how the surfaces differ? See app vs website for when each one wins.
If something breaks
Most iPhone hiccups come down to a connection, an outdated app or a login snag. Start here.
Force-close it, toggle Wi-Fi and mobile data, update it in the App Store, and restart the iPhone. Full fixes →
Sign-in loops often clear after updating the app or resetting your password. Try a different sign-in method if one stalls.
If the app is stuck for many people, it may be an outage. Check OpenAI's status page and wait it out.
Check Microphone and Camera permissions in iOS Settings, and confirm your plan supports the feature. More in the FAQ →
Availability and steps change with iOS and app updates. Verify current details in the app, on the App Store, and on OpenAI's help center.
FAQ
Open the App Store, tap Search, and type ChatGPT. Look for the listing whose developer is shown as OpenAI, then tap Get to install it. When it opens, sign in with an existing account or create one. Avoid any listing that copies the ChatGPT name or logo but shows a different developer, and never install it from a link in an ad, email or message. Check current details on OpenAI's help center if anything looks off.
On modern iPhones you can often trigger ChatGPT hands-free. Depending on your iOS version, you may be able to add a Shortcut that opens the app or starts voice, then assign that Shortcut to the Action button or invoke it with Siri. Apple has also introduced deeper ChatGPT integration in some system features. Exactly what's available depends on your iOS version, region and settings, so check the Shortcuts app and Settings, and OpenAI's help center, for what's live on your device.
The app can offer Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets on supported iOS versions, letting you jump straight into a new chat or voice from your Home Screen. To add one, touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap the plus button, search for ChatGPT, and pick a widget size. Available widget types change between app versions, so if you don't see one, update the app first.
Use the iOS share sheet. In another app — Safari, Photos, Notes — tap the Share icon, then look for ChatGPT in the row of app icons. If it isn't there, scroll the row, tap More, and enable ChatGPT. You can share selected text, a link or an image straight into a new chat. This is one of the fastest ways to ask about something you're already looking at.
Open a chat and tap the voice icon to speak instead of typing. There's a standard voice option, and on eligible plans an Advanced Voice mode with more natural, real-time conversation. The app needs microphone permission, which iOS asks for the first time you use voice; you can review or change it under Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone. Availability and exact behavior depend on your plan, region and app version.
Yes. Open Settings, tap Notifications, find ChatGPT in the list, and turn notifications off or adjust how they appear. You can also use a Focus mode to silence the app at certain times, or turn off in-app notification prompts within the app's own settings. If you never enabled notifications, you won't get any until you allow them.
Yes. The same app runs on iPad from the App Store, and on a larger screen it feels closer to the website, with more room for long answers and easier reading. Some iPad models support Split View and Stage Manager, so you can keep ChatGPT beside another app. Your account and history sync with iPhone and the web, so you can move between devices without losing your chats.
Inside the app, open Settings and review your data controls — including whether your conversations can be used to improve models, which you can usually turn off. You can also clear or delete chats there. In iOS Settings, review the app's access to Microphone, Camera, Photos and Notifications, and grant only what you need. As with any AI tool, avoid sharing sensitive personal, financial or confidential information.
